Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a story from the Canterbury Tales that depicts the mighty Sir Gawain. The Green Knight approaches King Arthur about a challenge but Sir Gawain insists he must take Arthur’s place. Gawain thinks he is the most useless of all the knights. Sir Gawain struggles to abide by the knight’s code.

In the story Gawain gets to take a swing at the Green Knight’s head with his axe. The Green Knight’s head comes off but he doesn’t die. Gawain must then hold up his end of the deal and let the green knight take a swing at his head. When the Green Knight swings at Gawain, Gawain flinches which proves him to be the lesser man. Gawain is allowed to leave with his life and with a lesson.

Historical Background Project

In this project I researched a plethora of things such as chivalry and the hundred years war. In my article about chivalry I learned about squires and the ideology behind chivalry. In another article I learned about King Henry the Conqueror. In my third article I learn about the hundred years war. In the final articles I learn about the black death and 10 of the most important vikings.

The historical background project help me to understand the time period that we were learning about. I did not like that we had to use “new” technology but I did enjoy learning about the Medieval time period. Personally it is one of my favorite time periods. The medieval era is full of brand new ideas and legends that seem like they could actually be real. https://docs.google.com/document/d/14T9B2VFXd9ITQy9rnMxEYfPt5PDXHso3IbJJ5aPCwk8/edit

Beowulf/Elegies Reflection

I learned Beowulf is the first true hero story that all of our modern stories are based upon. I also learned much about the time period during which Beowulf was written. The English middle ages where vikings and Normans invaded England. I learned about the beginning of feudalism and christianity in Angle-Land, future England.

Beowulf and other elegies showed me much about figurative language. In my opinion it was an excellent story, written in one of my favorite styles. Beowulf is a great story to teach English to high schools students and just a great story over-all.

Clutter Reflection after reading

The clutter reading helped me understand why clutter needs to be eliminated and how to go about actually eliminating it. The article also had helpful writing advice. I found myself writing more efficiently after learning about clutter.

I recorded information through a graphic organizer: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Smn0O84s-nYN3wiAX-poaN0o31fT5Ah8-RtlkabaDmI/edit Here I tell what exactly helped me the most. Zinser talks about clutter with first hand experience, solidifying his stance.

Scholarship Essay Reflection

Writing the scholarship essay and pier reviewing others helped me in my strategy for writing and with eliminating clutter. This project also gave me a foundation for what my actual scholarship essay will be. I was able to look at other scholarship essays that actually won scholarships.

In my scholarship essay https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OdxLsWuWzVo_tr1whk8Fm8_Q1xrGv5XvNAyk2st2Pj8/edit I use what I learned from others. Hopefully i’ll be able to make good use of my essay in the future. Whether I get to use the essay or not I learned good writing etiquette.
